Homo Quaerens The Seeker

What an awful book. Written in 1951, this book originally sparked great controversy with its mature themes focusing on the teenage angst, loneliness and rebellion of the protagonist Holden Caulfield. I guess its like a really bad version of James Dean’s classic Rebel Without a Cause. Caulfield is the archetype of an underachiever. Today kids are reading about the latest sluggard – Greg Heffley from The Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The characters Greg and Holden have a lot in common.

Catcher in the Rye follows the life of Holden Caulfield for a few days after being expelled from Pencey prep school as he returns home to New York City and contemplates life. Although, Caulfield does little contemplation and spends most of his time whining and complaining about everyone and everything. He sees the negative in everything (except his little sister) and makes one bad and offensive decision after another for almost 300 pages of misery. The only value I can find in reading this book today is to use Holden Caulfield as an example of what NOT to be – lazy, negative, and uninspired. Unfortunately the latest version of Holden Caulfield appears to be as popular with readers today as Catcher in the Rye was fifty years ago. When are we going to wake up and stop celebrating negative characters like Holden and Greg?

Just after finishing The Help a couple of months ago, I emailed my family, encouraging them to read it, beginning with these words: I am wondering if I can tell you what this novel means to me and about what novels can sometimes do. How fiction can speak truth and how that truth can set us free. Free from fears that trap us in lies and in denial, in obedience and in obsequiousness.
To Kill A Mocking Bird was such a book. Both it and The Help tell a story of how fears bind everyone involved. Both books are set amid the fears of “whites” and “coloreds” in the South. Fears that lead to lies and denial, anger, threats of violence and violence itself. Both tales tell of individuals who confront the fears with truth and of how facing fears diminishes their power. The “damn” of pent up human longing is then released; the parched land is again watered; life springs up where there was only death and the dying.
The Help takes place in Jackson, Mississippi, beginning in 1962. The central character, Skeeter, is a tall, skinny young white woman who has just returned home after graduating from college. Majoring in journalism and English, she wants to be a writer and immediately sets her sights high by applying for an editor’s position at a major American publisher headquartered in New York. She is told that she is naive and inexperienced and needs to address both if she is to have a chance as a writer. So, she starts work as the housecleaning tips writer for the local paper. Soon she learns from a “colored” maid, Aibileen, that the Aibileen’s son was also an aspiring writer, before his recent senseless death at work. The son wanted to write about how life was from the perspective of “colored” maids. Skeeter gradually makes the idea her own and, with the permission and assistance of Aibileen, they begin to take down the stories of the maids in their social network. Although Skeeter has grown up in the world, seeing it from the white side, the stories of “the help” give her

This lens hood does provide some relief from stray light hitting the lens. Because of the wide angle aspect of the lens it is meant for it is pretty shollow in depth. It also does afford some protection from bumps for the lens as well. The manual focus ring on the 18-55mm lens this hood is meant for is very narrow and difficult to use, grasping the lens hood and using it to focus is a better alternative. Construction of this hood is just a rigid piece of plastic. While a worthwhile product to have it is way overpriced.

I have not seen an aftermarket manufacturers hood in person for this lens but it is probably just as good and probably cheaper. I suggest you take a look at one of those before buying if you have a chance.

Outstanding price on this product. I am delighted with cleaner. It works much better than I expected. I have a Labrador retriever that likes to swim. She muddies up my car seats. I love the tools that came with the cleaner which I can use to keep my car looking spiffy again. A very good value.
